Who could go to Greece and miss the glories and antiquity of its capital Athens? Modern Athens is a vibrant city with great appeal and a kind of dilapitaded charm. It is still the least expensive capital in Europe and is one of the most beautiful, hospitable and exciting places to go.
The Acropolis and its monuments, its history, and the myths that are connected with it, are rightly the pride and the glory of this city. Whether you go to see the Parthenon, go wild shopping in Monastiraki, get tipsy in Plaka, go sightseeing, or mingle with the crowds in Syntagma Square, there's no doubt about it, Athens is a million cities in one.
There are an abundance of things to do in Athens. Apart from the obvious sights, there are all kinds of museums, Byzantine churches, temples and monuments. There is Syntagma Square, which is an obvious point of reference in this city, which has the House of the Parliament and the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, where the changing of the guard takes place every hour. Izmir - Upon arrival into Cesme, a 1 hour guided coach tour will take to Izmir, formerly known as Smyrna, and the third largest city in Turkey. There you will visit a Turkish mosque and take a small city bus tour through some very famous market streets and go shopping in the old Kemeralti bazaar.
Ephesus - A guided coach will wait for you at the harbor of Cesme to take you on an approximately 2 hour guided tour until you reach Ephesus, one of the most important and greatest classical cities in the world. The remains of the city are still spellbinding today. The magnificent temples, public buildings, villas and streets of Ephesus have been excavated and restored. There, you can also see the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the world.
Santorini holds a distinct allure. Thousands of tourists come every year to take in its spectacular views. The island is volcanic and has no vegetation or color, yet it has a strange and uncanny fascination of its own. What makes Santorini so visually unusual and beautiful is that the entire center of the circular island sank into the sea during the tremendous volcanic explosion of 3500 years ago. Some scholars even believe that the island is part of the legendary lost continent of Atlantis which supposedly slipped underwater during the disaster.
Things to do in Santorini
Santorini is a small island so you are able to see a lot in a day or two. You can rent a car and see the island on your own. There are a number of unique beaches in Santorini that have black-grayish sand and are considered black beaches. There are restaurants and bars nearby that make for an enjoyable day. There are also 2 very good wineries to visit on the island.
There are also a number of organized tours by boat or by bus that include visiting beaches, museums, and churches throughout the island. The most popular excursion is to the nearby islands called the Burnt Islands. Even today the volcano on the larger islet still gives off steam and sulpherous emissions. You can walk to the volcanic area (I'm warning you it gets hot!) or you can enjoy the hot springs nearby. Greek Village Tours will assist you with any tours you may be interested in.
